Elon Musk tells South Australia: 'I can fix your power network in 100 days or it's free'

Elon Musk says he can fix South Australia’s power crisis within 100 days, and if he fails to do so, he’ll finish the job for free.

The CEO of Tesla made the offer on Twitter, and has been talking figures with Mike Cannon-Brookes, the co-founder of Australian software maker Atlassian, who first asked how serious Mr Musk was.

South Australia has been affected by frequent blackouts since September, a problem that's caused political issues around energy policy.

This prompted Lyndon Rive, Tesla’s vice-president for energy products, to tell the Australian Finance Review that the firm could install the 100-300 megawatt hours of battery storage capable of solving the issues.

Mr Cannon-Brookes, meanwhile, has offered to “sort out politics & funding” in seven days.

Mr Musk subsequently quoted a price of $250 per kilowatt hour for 100 megawatt hour systems.

Mr Musk, who is also behind SpaceX, recently announced plans to fly two people to the moon next year.

He won’t identify the pair or the price tag, ut says they've already paid a “significant” deposit.

“I think they are entering this with their eyes open, knowing that there is some risk here,” Mr Musk said.

”They’re certainly not naive, and we'll do everything we can to minimise that risk, but it's not zero. But they’re coming into this with their eyes open.”
