YouTube has launched an online editor that lets people upload and edit their videos online without having to download and install video editing software on their PC.

The easy-to-use feature was announced on June 16 and is currently part of Google's "TestTube" projects (meaning that some features may still be a little "rough around the edges"). It enables users to combine multiple videos, trim or edit videos, add a soundtrack, and to post their completed video works to the YouTube site in one click.

"Video editing usually requires installing software packages and having a fair amount of technical savvy," writes YouTube on the Official YouTube Blog. "But we think video editing should be fun and easy, so we're introducing a new [video editing] tool."

YouTube user "Rewboss" has created a how-to video that will quickly take you through the new editing features.

Swedish company JayCut was the first to offer consumers a web-based alternative to heavy video editors. The company, which was founded in 2007, offers free and paid cloud-based video editing on your laptop, mobile or PC.
