New 'superhydrophobic' spray goes on sale in the US, making any product completely waterproof

Video shows spray that costs just $20 makes an iPhone left in a jug of water resilient to damage

The days of water-damaged iPhones and stained clothes may be over thanks to a new product that has just hit the shelves in the US.

Rust-Oleum Neverwet, developed by Ross Technologies, is a spray that makes any surface repel water by creating a superhydrophobic barrier.

When a liquid hits a surface that has had the spray applied, it forms into beads and rolls off, rather than be absorbed, in what is known as the Lotus effect.

As a promotional video released by the company shows, an iPhone coated in the spray can be left in a jug of water and then retrieved, with no perceivable damage.

The spray kit retails at $20 and is only available in select branches of the Home Depot chain, before being rolled out nationally.
