The Retina Display on Apple’s iPhone 4 is the winner of this year’s Gold Award for Display Application of the Year at the Display of the Year Awards (DYA).

The screen was selected for its "revolutionary" advancement in screen technology: "[p]acking four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-in. dia. screen found on earlier iPhone models, the 640x960-pixel Retina display set a new benchmark for mobile display resolution, low power consumption and image quality," explained the Society for Information Display (SID).

The prestigious annual awards show is organized by the Society for Information Display (SID) and held during the Display Week conference.

Rival smartphone maker Samsung was awarded the Silver Award for its On-cell touch AMOLED display for mobiles, a display that integrates the touch sensor onto the display itself rather than laminating a separate glass substrate onto the display.

Apple and Samsung were also victorious in the Display Application of the Year Awards picking up the Gold and Silver awards for the iPad and Samsung Galaxy S range of smartphones respectively.

Two display technology innovations that will influence the development of next generation mobile devices were awarded top honors in the DYA Display Component of the Year Awards.

E Ink Triton won the Gold Awards for its high-contrast, sunlight-readable, low-power performance, revolutionary color electronic paper display.

The Silver Award was given to Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and its pioneering flexible substrate for displays of all sizes.

"This list of 2011 DYA award winners honors innovations that are continuing to make interactions with handheld communication and computing devices more exciting, intuitive and useful than ever before. They demonstrate the remarkable contributions made by the display industry to broaden and enhance the lives of people," noted Bob Melcher, chairman of the SID Display of the Year Awards committee.

Display Week runs from May 15 to 20 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in LA, USA.
