The DUP announced its new slogan and everyone is making the same joke
Since signing an agreement to prop up Theresa May’s conservative government in 2017, Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) have received more attention than they’re accustomed to.
Being catapulted into the spotlight so quickly has drawn attention to the views of the pro-Brexit party. Among other things, political representatives from the biggest party in Northern Ireland have a long history of making homophobic and racist comments against minorities. They also vocally oppose abortion.
Given this fact, it’s fair to say there’s no love lost for the DUP among the majority of British voters outside Northern Ireland. So when the DUP unveiled their new slogan, people were more than happy to make a mockery of it.
This was made easier by the fact that the new slogan, “Strength to Deliver”, spells out a rather unfortunate acronym: STD
While of course there’s nothing wrong to be ashamed of if a person catches a sexually transmitted diseases (STD), this hasn’t stopped everyone on Twitter making the same joke about the party’s new slogan.
