Liverpool to introduce 'tourist tax' for visitors

01:05

Why will tourists pay a tax to stay in this UK city? Simon Calder explains

Another UK city is introducing a "tourist tax" for those who want to stay in hotels there.

It comes after hoteliers voted to introduce a £2 per night charge to guests in this location in a ballot carried out by Accommodation BID, representing 83 hotels.

According to the organisation, the charge is expected to bring in £9.2m over two years.

In 2023, Manchester became the first city in England to introduce a form of tourism levy via a legal workaround.

The new "tourist tax" is due to be rolled out from June — but why is it being introduced? Simon Calder explains.
