King Charles and Queen Camilla greeted by well-wishers and protesters at Royal Maundy Service

King Charles and Queen Camilla embraced supporters and appeared undeterred by protesters as they arrived for a Royal Maundy Service in Durham.

Charles arrived at Durham Cathedral for the Maundy Thursday service, after missing last year’s ceremony while receiving treatment for cancer.

As well as being greeted by well-wishers, a group of anti-monarchy protesters held placards and appeared to boo the royal couple as they arrived for the service on Thursday (17 April).

The King handed out Maundy Money to 76 men and 76 women – one for each year of his life – to thank them for their “outstanding Christian service”.

The recipients were presented with two purses, one red and one white, containing Maundy Money.
