IN YOUR review of A Self-Made Man (Review, 30 July) which I have co-written with male-to-female transsexual Paul Hewitt, the reviewer writes of the book's "rather tortuous moral tone". The writer cites Paul's horror when a gay man tries to pick him up, and his desire to forget his previous lesbianism. Your reviewer's mistake is to blame these attitudes on my work as a Daily Express features writer.

Those who understand transsexualism would recognise Paul's "horror" not as homophobia, narrow-mindedness, or even as evidence of middle-market tabloid values. Rather, it should be seen as the humble desire to be viewed as the heterosexual man he is, despite a body which constantly lets him down.
