Michael Adams wins the award for the weirdest victory of 1995, with his last-round win at Groningen, played on 30 December. Playing the bizarre 5...Bd6??! - not the sort of move one should adopt in polite company - Adams achieved a perfectly dreadful position from the opening.
Apparently overcome by his huge advantage, Piket missed the powerful 21.Ra4, then missed either 22.Rxg7! or 22.Bh6! Once allowed back in the game, Adams polished matters off quickly.
