Ah, the layers of postmodern paradox. A programme that is simultaneously mindless pap and a window into the soul, if not of humanity, at least of the nation.
This time, the contradictions are riper than ever: a "Celebrity" series of Big Brother has been won by the only one of that infamous bunch who wasn't also famous. So, let us just see if we have got this right.
People who are not celebrities now become famous for not being famous. Popular, well-known television personalities are now to be castigated and accused of seeking publicity. And the acres of unremitting coverage of the show, and enduringly astronomical viewing figures, are a sure sign of the death of celebrity culture.
