The decision of Friends of the Earth to sack its trustee of 20 years, the Rt Rev Hugh Montefiore, for advocating nuclear power will strike some as rather drastic. But it is hard to see that an organisation that has long campaigned against nuclear energy - and won international respect for its principled stand - had much choice. As for the Rt Rev Montefiore's views, they deserve a hearing and are worthy of debate. But he is wrong. The huge risks and storage problems of nuclear energy outweigh any potential benefits. It is through renewable energy that the world must save itself from the perils of climate change.
