What is the world of acting coming to? Not content with taking on the role of pantomine dame over Christmas, Britain's most respected theatrical knight and one of our most famous film stars, Sir Ian McKellen, has agreed to join the cast of Coronation Street for a run of 10 episodes in May.

Well, we suppose that once you've happily crossed over from Hollywood to panto, anything is possible. And as Sir Ian points out, he started his career in Manchester, so perhaps he could be said to be bringing them back the ham from Hampstead.
