JEREMY HART'S report on the search for alternative fuels (" 'Ello John, got any coconuts?" Sunday Review, December 17) includes the quote that "Nobody has actually built a car that can use [hydrogen]."

BMW has operated liquid-hydrogen-powered cars since the early 1980s in Munich. BMW believes this offers huge potential for emission-free transport, and has invested in a solar-powered liquid-hydrogen production plant in Bavaria.

The problem is lack of infrastructure for distribution and delivery of liquid hydrogen to the user. Nonetheless, we are convinced these problems can be overcome early next century.
