I READ 'Courts jail 845 for not paying TV licence fines' (13 March) with interest. This week I received a letter from 'an enquiry officer'. In order 'to prevent a further visit', I was required to complete and return the enclosed form. This form asked for my licence number; to get another if it had expired or risk a fine. There was an insidious presumption of guilt. I was unable to complete the form since it did not offer the opportunity to state whether I had a television. I have not.
That I have been bereft of Neighbours, degrading game shows, 'personalities' who have none and the imposition of a value system which selects 'news' with salacity, is entirely to my benefit. I trust the enquiry officer will accept these reasons as bona fide. However, I am prepared to go to jail rather than watch television.
