MELANIE McDONAGH'S article on women's health in the Third World ("How Clare Short aimed at an easy target, and missed", 4 July) failed to address Aids, which is having devastating consequences in developing countries. The most productive members of these societies are succumbing to the disease, thereby compounding the problems of poverty and deprivation. In the West, condoms have been an effective defence against Aids, but the Vatican's interference is preventing safer-sex education and distribution of condoms. This alone justifies Clare Short's condemnation of the Holy See, to which Ms McDonagh so objects.
