THE PLACE to look for real good news is within the violence. In other words, in stories about courage and sacrifice and humanitarian - or just human - devotion, whether in Yugoslavia or Somalia or in Liverpool's slums. For instance, the large number of ordinary Italians who are standing up to the Mafia at great personal risk, or the South Africans on both sides who are keeping cool despite provocation from extremists, or the Poles and Russians who are setting up viable small firms and campaigning locally to explain democracy and the market economy.
