LIKE Lynn Barber I am not raising my children so that some 'gung-ho berk' can drop them off a cliff ('Why I'm relieved I was a spoilsport mother', 28 March).

I'm trying to raise them to weigh the adventure against the risk and make their own choices, subject to a rare parental veto.

Weeding out unqualified instructors and unregistered centres is essential to children's safety and parents' peace of mind, but if schools were prevented from offering children adventure then many, including mine, would be denied experiences that many families cannot offer and most youngsters have not the resources to pursue as individuals.
