Sir: As publishers bring out hardback books with the pages glued in, you now get a more durable product if you wait for the soft-cover edition: hard covers treat threadless spines less gently. The "crack" as the glue breaks and the pages come loose is no longer a prerogative of old, sun- dried paperbacks.
