From Mr John Goldsmith

Sir: Many years ago I saw a solution to the problem expressed by Kate Rankin in her letter concerning how to signal that you are sorry (Letters, 28 October). In this particular instance, the owner of a Bentley had incorporated into the boot lid a sign which said "Thank you" when illuminated. Using microchip technology there is no reason why "Sorry" and "Help" could not be added to a sign which could be fixed to the rear windows of cars.

Yours faithfully,

John Goldsmith
