Jonathan Theobald sensationalises the landmines issue ("BAe in a fix over `mines' contract", 1 August). British Aerospace is not and will not be involved in the manufacture of anti-personnel landmines or their components. RDX is a standard military explosive used in a very wide range of military products and, while in theory it could be used in anti-personnel landmines, the US authorities have confirmed to Mr Theobald that they are not currently manufacturing anti-personnel landmines.
British Aerospace had already embarked on a series of discussions with the US authorities to ensure that no breach of the UK Landmines Act was in any way likely. The discussions centre on removing any potential clash between the jurisdictions of US and UK law.
