DAVID MILSTED's letter (30 May) on the proposal to build a bridge linking Skye to the mainland was, for me, one of the saddest items in last week's Independent on Sunday. Can a government unrepresentative of the people of the area, of Scotland generally, and now, probably, of Britain, push through such a measure? Can it really forbid the existing ferry company from competing? Can it really ignore the views of the islanders, and of pedestrians in particular?
This inept, sleazy Government thinks it can do absolutely anything so long as it lines the pockets of its supporters. We are close to having a corrupt, one-party state which for me is as depressing as the situations in Bosnia, Ireland or Sudan.
