Sir: Andrew Brown (Faith and Reason, 22 October) suggests that those Christians who do not follow the Pope understand the search for truth as one in which truth is the passive partner, whereas for the Pope truth reaches out towards humanity. This may be the position of some liberal theologians, but evangelicals of all schools would also want to insist that truth reaches out towards humanity. It is, in fact, essential to belief in the Incarnation.
Where we would differ from the Pope is in rejecting the idea that he or anyone else has an infallible capacity to receive the truth.
Yours faithfully, FRED PRITCHARD Newport, Gwent
