Sir: Another Bank Holiday has passed, and with it another confrontation between New Age travellers and the police. Rather than allowing such confrontations to become a traditional part of Bank Holidays, why not let the travellers hold their festivals? The Ministry of Defence owns thousands of acres of Salisbury Plain. A small part of this could easily be converted into a fixed festival site. This would save taxpayers a policing bill of a quarter of a million pounds each Bank Holiday, allay the fears and prejudices of local landowners and councils, and give the travellers their festival site.
Yours faithfully,
PETER BIERNACKI
Gloucester
