Letter: No green future with the CAP

Sir: Congratulations on your front page article "How green is your party?" (26 March). I believe much of the reason first-time voters feel alienated by party politics is that none of the major parties is willing to commit itself to genuinely brave and far-reaching green policies.

Many people believe that this reluctance stems from fear of damaging relations between government and industry. I suggest however that the major force of resistance to green politics resides in Brussels. Not until the Common Agricultural Policy is revoked will the British countryside be able to be free of intensive - and inherently destructive - farming practice.

Until the major parties challenge Europe on this matter and prove their green credentials are other than skin-deep, the young will look elsewhere for answers on the environment.
