Sir: How many weary London commuters would dispute Duff Hart-Davis's view of the city? (Go to hell? You live in it", 25 April). But we can't all be writers and farmers. Some of us have to earn our living in the filthy place.

Most of us have had to settle for a halfway house, within reasonable travelling distance from work, but not too far from the delights of the countryside that he describes.
