Sir: In my childhood, there were many posters in council offices, public libraries and on public noticeboards warning people to be on their guard concerning a public menace called the 'Squander Bug'. That was about 50 years ago.

It seems to have made a reappearance in Whitehall. But this species appears to be more virulent. It is hoped that our horticultural boffins can quickly find a method whereby this voracious bug can be controlled.
