Sir: Michael De-la-Noy (letter, 3 June) asks whether we find Peter Tatchell's use of the word 'queers' offensive. I don't, because I know from the context of his article, and his public profile, that he is a sincere campaigner for homosexual equality.

The point is of more than passing interest, for it goes to the heart of the debate about 'politically correct' language. Those who insist on an approved list of acceptable words miss the point that it is the intent and attitude of the speaker which are important. In the use of the word 'queers', I would indeed find it offensive if used by someone to belittle or stereotype homosexuals - but by Peter Tatchell? I think not.

Yours faithfully,

ROGER GRAHAM-LEIGH
