Letter: Real test of knowledge

"SUPER A-LEVELS" appear to be an attempt by the Government to come up with a quick solution to criticisms that A-levels no longer possess any value ("'Super A-levels' will stretch bright students", 16 August).

Current A-level syllabuses are so restrictive that questions are set on a very small range of topics. Success depends as much upon exam technique as knowledge and understanding. Any change should increase the breadth, not the level, of knowledge required. This would enable examiners to differentiate between the best students, while still keeping A-levels within reach of the less gifted.
