Sir: With reference to your report 'Bog-myrtle to scotch midges' (5 August), when I worked for the Forestry Commission in the Scottish borders in the Sixties, a man called Dodie Hall introduced us to the use of sheep dip as a midge deterrent. I must say that it was by far the best treatment we ever used, once we had got used to constantly smelling of something akin to Jeyes Fluid]
Yours sincerely,
