Sir: Reggie Nadelson asks, today, in 'Little things mean a lot', 'what about Nixon's dog?'

What about Franklin D. Roosevelt's dog? I understand that he used the name of his dog, Falla, in a speech to avoid embarrassment over expenditure, and this was so successful that Richard Nixon copied him in his 'Checkers' speech.
