Letter: Uncrowned but yet a king

Sir: Sandra Barwick says (11 December) that the Princess of Wales 'fought for an independent life as a Career Princess . . . aimed at showing that she has a public job to do in the Royal Family in her own right rather than as her husband's wife'.

I find this rather confusing. It was and still is only as the wife of the Prince of Wales that the Princess came to be in any position to 'do a public job in the Royal Family'. Of course her personal qualities and abilities would contribute to the value and scope of her public worth but she could never be held to be doing her job 'in her own right'. It remains so even after the separation, at least so long as she retains the title and privileges of the Princess of Wales.

Yours sincerely,

PHILIP NOAKES
