Sir: Has there been a fundamental change in the Vatican? Nicholas Coote (letter, 30 August) states that 'the Catholic Church rejects any coercive element in family planning programmes . . .'.

To enforce its own 'family planning programme', the Catholic Church has, in fact, always used the most coercive element imaginable - the wrath of God.
