DAVID McKITTRICK ('Hume steers for peace in risky waters', 2 May) says that Sinn Fein has a 'closely detailed, thoughtful and cohesive' philosophy. This does not seem to be borne out by his subsequent description. If Sinn Fein accepts that the British presence in Northern Ireland is no longer colonial why does it continue to support the Provisional IRA in its 'anti-imperialist war'?
Furthermore, while it is nice to know that Sinn Fein is recognising the existence of 900,000 people of Protestant extraction in north-east Ireland, one would take this more seriously if it would spell out what political, social, and economic rights such people would be entitled to in a 'peaceful and democratic' Ireland.
