Sir: I believe your leading article today oversimplifies misleadingly. The Oath of Allegiance is to 'Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors according to law'. Surely this is an oath to uphold the Constitution? Does it not entail that if a properly conducted Parliament enacted the introduction of a republic, then that allegiance to the present Head of State would transfer 'according to law' to the new Head, the President? Legally enacting the transfer would require the Royal Assent - but then, that is the Constitution.
