Sir: I write in response to Peter Loosemore's comments (letter, 17 August) on introducing black into the Union Jack. A couple of months ago, when I was travelling by London Underground, there was a drunken skinhead who continually chanted in a hostile manner, 'There is no black in the Union Jack'. He did so, combatively, in the faces of both black and white passengers, but because of his size and state, people left him to his moronic mantra.
As a Scottish anti-unionist, I have no love for the flag; but I feel that at least the introduction of black as an integral part of the design would be a retort to the racists who think that the flag represents their ideal of a white Britain and that people will tolerate this continued polarisation.
Yours faithfully,
LAURIE DONALDSON
