IF THERE was ever a more eloquent exposition of why old Labour was doomed, we need look no further than Mark Seddon's article ("Sorry, Tony: 'new' is no longer sexy", 10 January).

Mr Seddon reasons that it was actually John Smith who rescued the Labour Party. Tony Blair only came after all the hard work had been done and added an adjective to a party name. Mr Seddon would love nothing better than to see Tony Blair have as hard a time as possible in the next few years. And why is that? Because Mr Seddon and his ilk are wedded to sectarianism and old Labour partisanship in a way that the Tory right can only dream of.
