Cannabis: addiction, public policy, metaphysics

From Mr Mark C. Henderson

Sir: The questions posed by Robin Prior (8 March) are metaphysical. Is an individual free to enslave himself? Is he free to encourage, if only by example, others to do the same? To cite the legal use of alcohol in support of freedom is to answer the former question in the affirmative. A letter championing the free use of cannabis must, intentionally or otherwise, influence others.

Mr Prior chooses to ignore an older morality. The times he lives in - to which he chooses to enslave himself - are moth-eaten and rejected. Cannabis belongs to a decade as empty as Mr Prior's concept of freedom.

Yours faithfully,

M. C. HENDERSON
