Sir: I take strong exception to the suggestion in Barrie Clement's article (6 March) which states that the TUC has abandoned a commitment to seek a national minimum wage set at half of male median earnings.
The TUC's position, set out at the 1994 Congress, includes a commitment to the formula and a programme of work on its introduction, including developing a system of fixing the level that takes account of overall circumstances and the scope for discussion between the social partners.
Far from abandoning this objective, the national minimum wage is at the heart of the TUC's campaign for full employment and economic recovery.
Yours sincerely,
JOHN MONKS
General Secretary, TUC
London, WC1
