COLIN TUDGE points the finger for BSE at the "fixation on profit" in our society ("Cheap meat. Who needs it?", 24 March). But he does not draw the only sensible conclusion: that we need to take power out of the hands of the social class that makes the profit and its political representatives.

That does not mean a bureaucratic, Stalinist, state capitalism of the type that Colin Tudge also rightly condemns. It means replacing both of these with a system in which people collectively and democratically control production on the basis of human need. In other words, the sort of socialism that both Major and Blair claim is "old-fashioned".
