1978: the flowing flares date the scene to the decade in which small boys around the world set off on their Chopper bikes to emulate the American dare-devil Evel Knievel. Knievel - 39 here - journeyed in search of ever more dangerous stunts. But the park authorities never let him tackle the Grand Canyon, a leap his son was to carry off with such panache 21 years later.

1999: he is of course his father's son. Robbie Knievel, 37, hits the landing ramp to complete his 228ft leap over the Grand Canyon - the Hualapai Indian reservation 2,500ft below him - and beat his own world record. "Robbie is the true heir to the Knievel name," said his proud dad. "He can not only jump better than me but he does it with no hands on the handlebars."
