1971: a 29-year-old Jonathan Aitken walks with his mother to his first appointment at the Old Bailey, where he faces charges of breaching the Official Secrets Act in a newspaper article on the war in Biafra. A sympathetic summing-up by Mr Justice Caulfield sees him acquitted. Who would imagine he'd be back here 28 years later?

1999: a mother is still supporting her son, though this time it will end in tears. Jonathan Aitken, now 56, is pictured in January at the start of the perjury trial at the Old Bailey that concluded last Tuesday in an 18-month prison sentence. 'For nearly four years you wove a web of deceit in which you entangled yourself,' said Mr Justice Scott Baker.
