TORY REBELLIONS THAT WEREN'T: 1985, 30 Tory MPs launched the Conservative Centre Forward Group - fizzled out when only 10 were prepared to go public; April 1988, 38 Tories voted against the poll tax (government majority, 25); October 1992, mini-rebellion against pit closure programme produced compromise that failed to save any pits; July 1993, Government won the Maastricht vote by a whisker (the Speaker's casting vote) after serious chat with Ulster Unionists; November 1992: rebels with help of Lords delayed railway privatisation by a few hours.

ONE THAT GOT AWAY: April 1986, 68 Tories voted with Opposition against Sunday trading (Ulster Unionists used the vote to protest against Anglo-Irish agreement).
