The 1,500-mile-long Grand Trunk Road, which runs from Kabul to Calcutta and links the eastern and western regions of South Asia, is one of the area's oldest, longest and certainly most significant highways.

In this rich and vibrant travel- ogue – accompanied by local oral testimony collected by the historian Irna Qureshi – the photojournalist Tim Smith documents the huge array of different ways of life that the Grand Trunk Road supports and, in particular, all the links it has created between India and Britain since the days of the Raj.
