Universal has confirmed that Despicable Me 3 will hit cinemas in June 2017, with a new Grinch movie also on the way.

The next instalment in the animated series comes after Despicable Me 2 proved popular, earning £561 million at the international box office.

No details were given regarding the film's plot, or which members of its cast (which includes Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig) will be returning.

The sequel focused on international villain Gru as he was recruited by the Anti-Villain League to help fight a new super criminal, with a spin-off series revolving around the film's Minions now in the works.

Universal also announced a new movie based on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas today, to be released in November 2017.

The film will be an animation this time after the last movie was a live action film starring Jim Carrey.

Despicable Me 2 was nominated in the best animation category at the Golden Globes this weekend, but lost out to Frozen, which became Disney's best performing animated film ever earlier this week.
