Ava DuVernay: When They See Us director ‘thanks’ Golden Globes for snubbing Netflix show

‘I don’t have to juggle getting into hair, makeup and gown while worrying about impeding war’

Ava DuVernay has “thanked” the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for failing to nominate When They See Us at the Golden Globes.

The director, whose Netflix show about the Central Park Five was one of this year’s biggest snubs, threw shade at voters on Twitter ahead of the ceremony.

“[The] upside of not being nominated for [a] Golden Globe for When They See Us: I don’t have to juggle getting into hair, makeup and gown while researching, reading and worrying about impeding war,” she wrote.

DuVernay added: “Also: easier to block trolls without newly manicured nails. Thanks, HFPA. This is a win win!”

The filmmaker’s comments about an “impeding war” references the US airstrike that killed Iran’s top general Qassem Soleimani and others near Baghdad airport.

Following the event, fears of an escalation in conflict and warfare has been sparked around the world.

Tonight’s ceremony will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.

Films competing for the top prizes include The Irishman, Marriage Story, Rocketman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
