2017 looks nothing but bleak - but there's always cinema.
A constant refuge in times of doubt and uncertainty, celluloid dreamers will undoubtedly look once more to the silver screen both as a means of escape and as a way to process our communal reality. And there's plenty to look forward to on both counts.
Unsurprisingly, the superhero cavalcade shows no signs of slowing this year, with Marvel even upping their output for next year; with particular highlights being the off-kilter charms of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, while DC finally puts to screen one of its most iconic heroes, Wonder Woman.
Franchises continue elsewhere with the highly-anticipated sequels to two of Ridley Scott's finest films in Alien: Covenant and Blade Runner 2049; alongside major passion projects from Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg, in Dunkirk and The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara respectively. And then, of course, there's Star Wars: Episode VIII.
It's a stellar year for smaller films as well; with projects from Terrence Malick (Weightless), Sofia Coppola (The Beguiled), Darren Aronofsky (Mother), and Edgar Wright (Baby Driver). That's not forgetting next year's Oscar-tipped films: La La Land, Moonlight, and Manchester by the Sea.
