Dwayne Johnson is working on a reboot of The Scorpion King

‘I’m honoured and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,’ actor says

Dwayne Johnson is working on a reboot of The Scorpion King with Universal Pictures, it has emerged.  

The actor and former WWE champion rose to fame as a major Hollywood draw after starring in the 2002 action film, following a role opposite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in The Mummy Returns (2001).  

The Scorpion King went on to earn $178m (£134m) at the global box office and launched Johnson’s career as a movie star.  

Variety has now confirmed that he will teaming up with Universal and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Production to produce a new film.

“The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honoured and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” Johnson said in a statement.  

“I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hard-working actors today.”

Johnson also gave a shoutout to screenwriter Johnathan Herman, who won an Oscar for his script for 2015’s Straight Outta Compton: “I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience,” he said.
