Golden Globes: Natalie Portman's brilliant jab at all-male director nominees resurfaces online

Actor was praised for her swipe at the awards ceremony

The moment Natalie Portman subtly criticised the lack of female representation in the Best Director category while she was presenting at the Golden Globes has resurfaced online.

The Oscar-winning star was announcing the winner of Best Director alongside director Ron Howard when she highlighted that fact the five nominees were all male after the surprising snub for Lady Bird filmmaker Greta Gerwig and Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins.

“Here are all the male nominees,” she said as the names of Christopher Nolan, Martin McDonagh, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and eventual winner Guillermo del Toro were reeled off.

The moment was met with praise on social media.

Disconcertingly, this year’s ceremony Best Director category is comprised of five male filmmakers once again following yet another snub for Gerwig, who was expected to be nominated for her adaptation of Little Women.

Gerwig’s partner Noah Baumbach, who is nominated for Netflix drama Marriage Story, responded to the controversy on the red carpet.

Other women filmmakers deserving of nominations in the category include Lulu Wang (The Favourite) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), to name just two.

The ceremony’s top prizes went to First World War drama 1917 and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which won Best Film in their respective Drama and Comedy categories.

Elsewhere, Phoebe Waller-Bridge took home two prizes for her work on Fleabag and, while accepting the trophy for Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical, cracked a raunchy joke about Barack Obama.

Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony and immediately shocked with a joke about Leonardo DiCaprio’s 22-year-old girlfriend, Camila Morrone, and Prince Andrew.
