One of the major characters in Guardians of the Galaxy was Thanos, or - as you may know him - that purple guy who sat in the floating chair.

He basically orchestrated the events of the film, making Ronan the Accuser go after the Infinity Stone which would put him in contention with Star Lord.

However, neither Thanos or any of the Infinity Stones will appear in the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, even though the whole of Marvel’s Phase Three is gearing up towards Infinity War; the third Avengers film in which they will finally take on the super-villain.

"Thanos will not appear in Vol 2. No,” director James Gunn confirmed in a Q&A on Facebook (via Digital Spy).

"As I've said before, Thanos isn't in this movie. I think he's gonna have a little bit to do and say when it comes to certain wars and infinity. We've got other fish to fry in Guardians Vol 2.

He went on to say: ”We're not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2. Is that a spoiler? It's not really a thing.”

Gunn also confirmed that none of the Avengers will appear in the sequel, said he would be Team Iron Man if he had to choose, and said he is very excited for Batman v Superman.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be released 28 April 2017 in the UK.
