Woody Harrelson is apparently the ‘top choice’ to play Han Solo’s mentor in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film.

Variety reports that negotiations are still in the early stages, but Harrelson is the casting directors’ favourite at this stage. Disney declined to comment.

It wouldn’t be Harrelson’s first time playing a mentor-figure, having been by Katniss Everdeen’s side in The Hunger Games franchise.

As mentors go, Haymitch was a bit of a rogue, and you could imagine his Star Wars character being the same given Han Solo’s reckless tendencies.

Alden Ehrenreich will play Han in the next standalone Star Wars film, with Donald Glover playing Lando Calrissian and Emilia Clarke also on the cast.

The Lego Movie’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the as-yet-untitled film, which producer Kathleen Kennedy has teased will have the feel of a Western.

Filling the gap between Star Wars 8 and 9, the Han Solo movie will have a lot of expectation on it given the strong performance of the first standalone Star Wars outing, Rogue One.

It is scheduled for release on 25 May, 2018.
